Steve Martin, a Las Vegas certified public accountant, has announced he will run for state treasurer against first-term incumbent Kate Marshall.

Martin, a Republican, served as state controller in 2006, a post he was appointed to by Gov. Kenny Guinn after the death of Kathy Augustine. He is currently a member of the State Board of Finance.

"In difficult times, Nevadans need a state treasurer with the experience and qualifications to make difficult decisions that protect Nevada taxpayers," he said.

As a CPA, he specializes in financial and fraud audits for businesses.

Guinn endorsed Martin's candidacy, saying he did an exceptional job as controller.

Martin ran for controller in 2006 but was defeated by Democrat Kim Wallin.

Marshall has said she will seek election to a second term as treasurer.
