Observatory visitor wins commemorative coin
A Californian visiting family in Carson City won a commemorative coin signed by astronaut Buzz Aldrin in a drawing at the WNC Jack C. Davis Observatory. Tony Tyson is the proud owner of the coin and a four-inch Celestron GoTo telescope. The drawing, which took place during a stargazing party Dec. 26 in the observatory, was the culmination of a yearlong celebration commemorating the International Year of Astronomy. Faculty and staff assist Food for Thought
WNC employees raised $500 for the non-profit Carson City group that provides food for the weekends to children who are homeless. Many local children are able to eat weekday breakfast and lunch at school, but go without on the weekends and holidays. Food for Thought provides them with weekly backpacks containing healthy food that can be eaten without need of an oven or refrigerator. During the year, the charity will provide more than 100,000 meals to nearly 500 homeless children. Donation information: www.nvfoodforthought.org or 883-1011.
Getting personal with student e-mails
Beginning with the spring 2010 semester, WNC students will use their own selected e-mail addresses to communicate with the college. They will be asked to identify a personal contact e-mail address when they register for spring classes, which begin Monday, Jan. 25. In the past, the college issued e-mail addresses to students.
Current students will need to update their e-mail contact information in the college's Web-REG online registration system. E-mail accounts are available at no charge through a number of Web sites including Yahoo!, Google, Hotmail, or any internet provider. For information, call 445-3273.
