WNC News & Notes: College child care center earns accreditation

Western Nevada College's Child Development Center on the Carson City campus has earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The designation is a prestigious indicator of quality at the center, which offers full-time and part-time care for children of students, faculty, staff and the community. The center earned perfect scores in areas relating to teaching, community relationships, leadership and management, families, assessment, and relationships, as well as a near perfect score in the area of curriculum.

Workshop prepares seniors for college

Western Nevada College Student Outreach is planning a series of workshops at high schools throughout the spring to assist incoming freshmen with the registration process, financial aid, and placement testing in preparation for their first semester at WNC. Upcoming Bridge to Success workshops include:

Carson High School - Jan. 26, Feb. 9, Feb. 23, March 30, April 13, April 27, May 11 and May 25. Financial Assistance Workshop - Tuesday, March 16, 5:30-7 p.m.

Dayton High School - Jan. 27, Feb. 24, March 24, April 28, and May 26. Financial Assistance Workshop - Wednesday, March 10, 5:30-7 p.m.

New drivers can get training in Carson, Douglas

Western Nevada College will offer six sessions of new driver education this spring for teens age 15 and older. Each session meets 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Carson City and in Douglas.

Carson City session dates are:

• Saturdays, Jan. 30-Feb. 27 (no class Feb. 13, President's Day weekend)

• Saturdays March 6-27

• Monday-Thursday April 5-8 (Carson City spring break)

• Saturdays, April 24-May 15.

Douglas session dates are:

• Saturdays, Feb. 17-March 20

• Monday-Thursday, March 29-April 1 (Douglas spring break)

Cost per session is $110.

Nevada law requires new drivers under age 18 to take a 30-hour New Driver Education course if one is offered within 30 miles of their home. The class may also improve their success rate on the state non-commercial driver's license exam, which now costs $25 for first time testing. There is a new retest fee of $10 for each time the written or behind-the-wheel driving skills test is retaken.

Students will learn safe driving techniques through lectures, class discussion, guest speakers, and films that cover Nevada driving regulations, basic vehicle control, and driving maneuvers in various situations and environments.

Teens learn how to avoid accidents, and what to do if involved in an accident, their vehicle breaks down, or they are stopped by a public safety officer.

A great Valentine's weekend date

The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company presents a high-stepping revue of some of Broadway's best productions, from "Jersey Boys" to "Mamma Mia", in song and dance. Three performances, featuring a live orchestra and a cast of more than 40, hit the stage at the Carson City Community Center at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 12-13 and 2 p.m. Feb. 14. Tickets are $20 general admission, $18 students and seniors, and $16 youth 17 and younger. Call 445-4249.

Spring registration remains strong

With a week to go before spring classes begin on Monday, Jan. 25, registration remains strong at all Western Nevada College campuses. More than 4,800 students have already enrolled. Additionally, more students are seeking a degree or certificate than in past years. The number of students taking at least one online class is also increasing. More than 900 class sections are available that help prepare students for a career, update employment skills, and complete the first two years of a bachelor's degree. WNC also offers a Bachelor of Technology degree in Construction Management, and courses in everything from astronomy and computer networking to environmental sciences and early childhood education.
