Schlager, Valladares medal in Sacramento tourney

SACRAMENTO - Nick Schlager and Junior Valladares have been Carson High's top two wrestlers this season, and they were the only two to medal at the two-day Foothill Tournament at Memorial Auditorium.

Schlager finished second at 135 pounds, while Valladares was fourth.

Carson brought nine wrestlers to the tournament and seven of them made it to the second day. Ryan Hoskins (215) and heavyweight Justin Barlow were taking SATs and didn't make the trip. Cole McCarthy was nursing a sore back.

Schlager was pinned in the final by East Clovis' Moses Quzeda, which dropped him to 5-1 for the tournament.

"He was leading throughout the match," Carson coach Tim McCarthy said. "The kid escaped on Nick and took him down. It was an unfortunate ending."

Valladares lost 7-2 to Ross Longnecker from Chico High.

"Junior had a good tournament," McCarthy said. "He was a little off in the quarters when he lost his first match to the kid that finished second. He's still getting his legs back under him."

Luke Carter finished one win away from a medal. He lost 8-7 in his final match after giving up a reversal with time running down. He went 4-2 for the tournament.

Patrick Craugh (103). Ricky Ugarte (119) and Jordan Luhrs (140) all went 3-2.

"Jordan had an awesome tournament," McCarthy said. "He showed that he is a legitimate varsity wrestler."

BOYS BASKETBALL

DOUGLAS EXPLODES FOR WIN

FALLON - The Fallon boys basketball team held its ground in the first half against Doulgas on Saturday.

The Greenwave trailed, 29-26, at the half before the Tigers exploded for 51 points in the second en route to a, 80-52, 4A Sierra League win.

"They settled for the perimeter in the first half, which helped us," Fallon head coach T.W. Cunningham said. "We were throwing over the top the whole first half, and all of sudden, we're throwing our guys into traps."

Fallon broke through the Tigers full-court press early and kept pace with the Northern Region's second-ranked squad. Junior Miles Adams hit a 3-pointer just before the half to slice the deficit to three.

Douglas, however, picked up its intensity on defense and forced numerous turnovers to break loose in the third quarter. The Tigers went on runs of seven, eight and eight for a 57-39 lead at the end of the quarter.

Douglas junior Garrett Getty had a game-high 23 points and freshman Hunter Myers added 10. Senior Jake Johnston led the Greenwave with 12 points.

VC BOYS WIN TWICE

The Muckers knocked off Pyramid Lake 47-43 and Coleville 66-53 over the weekend in Northern 1A action.

The Muckers went into halftime tied with the Lakers, but outscored them 15-9 in the final quarter to grab their fifth league win of the year on Friday.

The game was moved to the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony gym after Pyramid found itself without any power its home gym. The venue didn't matter for the Muckers (5-2 Northern 1A) who were led by Zach Shell's 11 points. Hunter Redman added another 10 points for Virginia City.

On Saturday, Kody Burrell scored 15 points to lead Virginia City past Coleville, Redman added 13 and Shell 11.

VC is 6-2 in league and 12-6 overall.

SWEEP FOR VC GIRLS

Virginia City's girls basketball team rolled to easy wins over Pyramid Lake and Coleville.

On Friday, Virginia City notched a 70-46 win over the Lakers, and came back on Saturday for a 57-30 win over Coleville.

Alexa Ballinger scored 25 in the win over Pyramid Lake and Gigi Glogovac added 18.

Against Coleville, Glogovac scored 18 points. pulled down 14 rebounds and blocked four shots. Taylor Parsons added 15 points. For Coleville, Lela Stokes led the way with 11 points.

The Muckers are 17-2 overall and 7-0 in league.

TIGERS TIP FALLON

FALLON - Emotions got the best of the Fallon girls basketball team Saturday. The Lady Wave let a 7-point lead slip away in a 35-32 Class 4A Sierra League loss to Douglas.

Fallon (4-4 league, 9-8 overall) led most of the way, but the Tigers (3-5, 8-10) chipped away the deficit in the fourth quarter to pick up their second straight win.

Senior Sara Parsons fouled out with one minute, 27 seconds left in the game and the Lady Wave up, 31-30. Douglas senior NeJae Jackson, who had a game-high 16 points, scored five consecutive points to give the Tigers their first lead since the second quarter.

CARSON FRESHMEN WIN

Carson High's freshman basketball team rebounded from a 20-point second-quarter deficit to knock off Douglas 56-51 Friday night at Morse Burley Gym.

Carson trailed 25-10 after one quarter, but cut the deficit to 42-39 after the third quarter. Carson outscored Douglas 17-9 in the fourth to win.

Sage Smith led Carson with 14 points, Michael Bass added 13 and Rafe

King chipped in eight.

JV GIRLS TRIUMPH

Carson High's JV girls improved record to 17-2 with a 26-23 victory over Douglas at Morse Burley Gym.

In a game that was a see-saw affair with multiple lead changes, the Senators scored the final four points, all by Mary Longero, in a hard-fought game to prevail.

The Senators were led by Emily Collins' nine points. The Senator defense was anchored inside by Kenzie Price.
