Lowden to speak to GOP central committee

U.S. Senate Candidate Sue Lowden is the Carson City Republican Central Committee speaker from 6:30-8:15 p.m. Thursday in the Sierra Room at The Plaza Hotel, 801 S. Carson St.

Lowden, a longtime Nevada resident, philanthropist and news reporter, also is a former state senator.

Appeals Board vacancy announced

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from individuals who may be interested in serving on the Board of Appeals in the registered architect category.

For this vacancy, the term expires January 2012. The applicants may need a license to do business in Carson City. This board provides advice on matters involving the building codes and the fire codes in Carson City.

Applicants should be aware this board requires a minimum commitment of up to five hours a month. All members will serve without compensation.

Volunteer applications may be obtained from and returned to Carson City Executive Offices, 201 N. Carson St. #2. For details, call 887-2100.

Scholarships offered to women pilots

The Reno Area Chapter 99s is offering two scholarships: one advanced rating in the amount of $3,000 for someone who holds a valid private pilot certificate and current medical; and one private certificate in the amount of $2,000 for someone holding a valid student certificate.

Cooperative Extension offering radon test kits

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension offices in Carson City, Washoe and Douglas counties are offering residents free radon-testing kits for a limited time.

The UNCE offices are extending the free offer in an effort to get more Nevadans to test their homes for radon. Other county UNCE offices are charging only $5 for the easy-to-use test kits.

To get a free radon test kit, go to the Carson City/Storey County Cooperative Extension office at 2621 Northgate Lane, Ste. 15, or call 887-2252.

Watch black bear and cubs in den

Since Northern Nevada is black bear country, many might be interested in seeing a black bear in her den with new cubs.

There's a camcorder directed at Lily, the female bear. She was in hibernation and recently delivered her babies.
