Learn to prune fruit trees

Are your fruit trees not as productive you would like?

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is offering a free workshop, "Training and Pruning Fruit Trees," presented by Master Gardener Michael Janik at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 2 at Bartley Ranch in Reno.

Janik will discuss how to prune and train fruit trees to maximize their production and keep them looking good. He will also discuss how to restore older trees.

Janik is a local expert well-equipped to answer fruit-growing questions. He grows more than 100 apple varieties in his 4,000-square-foot orchard. He also grows several cherry, plum, peach and nectarine trees, as well as currants, grapes, elderberries, raspberries and hops.

Janik is accomplished at grafting and specializes in growing espalier fruit trees, which are trained to grow flat against a trellis or lattice.

The workshop is part of the Gardening in Nevada series of free classes presented by Master Gardener volunteers of University of Nevada Cooperative Extension at 6:30 p.m., every Tuesday in February and March at Bartley Ranch, located at 6000 Bartley Ranch Road, off Lakeside Drive in Reno.
