String players needed

for Carson Valley Pops

The Carson Valley Pops Orchestra, under the direction of Conductor Elizabeth King, has begun rehearsals for the 2010 concert season.

Although the orchestra welcomes all new and returning musicians, especially needed at this time are string players.

Only informal auditions are conducted as needed.

Four concerts are planned for the 2010 season, including concerts scheduled in March, on the 4th of July, October and December.

Tickets on sale for cowboy festival in Genoa

Tickets are on sale for the Genoa Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival presented by the Carson Valley Arts Council and the Town of Genoa April 29-May 2. 

The event includes cowboy poets and musicians Waddie Mitchell, Don Edwards, Paul Zarzyski, Lacy J. Dalton and the Dalton Gang, the Comstock Cowboys, Dave Stamey, Larry Maurice, Richard Elloyan, Sourdough Slim Old West Trio, Cross Town Cowboys, Dennis Golden, Tom Weatherby and Ron Scofield.

Mile High sweetheart show set for Feb. 9

Mile High Jazz Band Presents "Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts" Feb. 9.

Treat your Valentine to a Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts, an evening of sweet and hot big-band music 8-10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10 at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson St.

General admission is $5 at the door; free for age 18 and under. Dance instruction,

6 - 7:15 p.m. is $5 additional.

Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts features the 19-member Mile High Jazz Band and vocalist Sheryl Adams, presenting jazzy versions of favorite love songs for Valentine's Day, and other swinging, big-band selections. The performance is funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

Senior tours moving trips to Tuesdays starting Feb. 9

The Carson City Senior Citizens "Happy Senior Tours" group is moving the day of its monthly bus trips from Wednesday to the second Tuesday of the month, effective immediately. The group will travel to Boomtown on Tuesday, Feb. 9. To make reservations or for more information, call 882-3352.

The bus will load at 7:45 a.m., in the east parking lot of the Senior Center. It will depart at 8:15 a.m. and return to the center at 4 p.m.

Create a Civil War wardrobe in Virginia City

The VC Sewing B will be lending its talents to helping ladies create their own Civil War costumes on a budget.

Carolyne and Yvonne will be hosting the VC Sewing B, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. the first and third Saturday of each month from now through June at the Tahoe House Hotel in Virginia City.

Bring your own sewing machine and sewing basket of tools or call to make arrangements to rent the equipment needed.

Participants will be making "open drawers" out of pillowcases, petticoats out of bed ruffles, chemise, corset cover and learning how to construct your very own corset as well as your basic day dress. Build a Civil War re-enactors wardrobe without having to spend too much.

Retired Public Employees to meet Tuesday

Retired Public Employees of Nevada will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2 at the Carson Senior Citizens Center on Beverly Drive.

Ann Profitt will speak on Cancer 101-learning facts on cancer.
