English professor receives award

Western Nevada College English Professor Ursula Carlson is the recipient of the 2010 Nevada Regents Teaching Award.

Colleagues nominated Dr. Carlson for her participation and leadership in seminars, workshops and groups at WNC and in the community; for her local and national recognition for writing projects and exams; and the success of her students.

Carlson said she is "deeply moved by this honor. The Regents' Teaching Award affirms all that I value: the excitement of learning, the beauty of thought and expression, the riches of knowledge and art, and the consolation of understanding oneself and others."

Students supporting adult students

Attending college as an adult can be challenging and intimidating. "Campus Connect," a newly formed group at WNC, is helping ease the transition to college by building a social network specifically for adult students. Through meetings and events on campus, the club aims to create a positive college experience for adults new to or returning to college. 'Dynamic Duo' of poetry perform Feb. 16

Western Nevada College's "Faces, Voices and Stories" spring cultural series begins with the "Dynamic Duo," a pair of poets who use dual voice work and comedy, along with raw poetry, to convey their message.

Panama Soweto and Ken Arkind will perform at noon and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16 in the Dini Student Center, Carson City campus. Performances are free and open to the public.

Broadway revue coming Feb. 12-14

Plan now to enjoy a Valentine's weekend spectacular on stage with the Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company. "Opening Night on Broadway" is a revue of Broadway musicals. Performances are

Feb. 12-14 at the Carson City Community Center.

The show features a live orchestra and a cast of more than 40 performers. Selections have been chosen from "Mary Poppins," "Wicked," "Mamma Mia," "Jersey Boys," "Hairspray" and more. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets: $20- general admission, $18-students and seniors, and $16-youth 17 and younger.

Scholarship event

to benefit women

The fourth annual International Women's Day scholarship fundraiser, for women college students in Northern Nevada, will be from noon to 3 p.m. March 7 at the Siena Hotel Spa Casino in Reno. Cost is $35 ($45 after Feb. 26).

Event attendees may designate that proceeds from their ticket directly benefit Western Nevada College or the Nevada institution of their choice.
