COMMUNITY BRIEFLY: Local soccer coach turns to personal training

During the fall soccer season, you will find Cassie Carter walking up and down the sidelines shouting encouragement to members of the Carson High varsity girls soccer team.

Carter, after graduating from the University of Nevada in May, has started a personal training business through Atleta. She is doing boot camps, personal training and sport specific training.

Starting next week, she is starting a summer cardio conditioning and summer strength conditioning programs at Mills Park.

Both programs are open to all athletes at all schools. Carter said she hopes to raise the bar for sports in Northern Nevada by getting the athletes fit before their season starts.

The cardio program is Monday, Wednesday and Friday for four weeks starting July 12 and is $90. The strength program is Tuesday and Thursday for four weeks, starting July 13 and is $60. Both classes go from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The athletes also can attend both classes for $130. Registration is done at the Carson City Aquatic Center. The athletes must obtain a liability form and have it signed prior to working out (these are available at the pool).

Women's Day set

at Reno-Tahoe Open

There is just limited space remaining to experience the Reno-Tahoe Open's first Women's Day July 17, which is presented by Barrick Gold of North America.

Former LPGA pro Annika Sorenstam will host a golf demonstration, there also will be an upscale expo, lunch, a fashion show and comments by Sorenstam, Lt. Col. Julie Hudson of the United States Air Force Reserves and Patty Sheehan. Hudson was the first female combat mission-ready A-10 fighter pilot in the Air National Guard.

Tickets include season passes to the RTO, a shuttle ride from the Summit to the RTO, one ticket to the RTO Wine Walk, one raffle ticket and entry into all the women's activities.

The day starts at 9 a.m.

Mosconi pool lead

Big Dogs and Support Rackless Habits are tied for first place in the Carson City chapter of the Mosconi Division of the American Poolplayers Association.

Both teams have 24 points, one ahead of Cues Yer Daddy and Twisted Stix with Attitudes.

Casey Richards of Support Rackless Habits leads the 6-7 tier with 17 points, one ahead of David Giovacchini of Jerry's Kids and Alex Gutierrez of Role Models. Dennis Sisson Jr. of Big Dogs leads the 4-5 tier with 23 points, three ahead of Kirsten Kehe of Twisted Stix with Attitudes and five ahead of Robert Matteson of Trouble Makers. Tami Beasley of Cues Yer Daddy leads the 2-3 tier with 15 points, two ahead of Justin Harris from Fun Tickets, Kenneth Collins of Big Dogs and Bobby Harris of Squeeze Play.

In the Comstock Division, Twisted Stix leads 9-Spoke 562-561. All Work & No Play is third at 544.

Daniel McRae of Cornbread & Whiskey leads the 6-9 tier with 29 points, 20 points better than Alex Gutierrez of Dean's Machine. Robert Wilson of Poke 'N' Hope leads the 4-5 tier with 29 points with Christopher Skelley of Dean's Machine second at 21. Jerry Lehman of Tommy's, Jason Kochamp of All Work & No Play and Casey Hummel of Miller Time are tied for third at 20. Gloria Rodriguez of Twisted Stix lead the 1-3 tier with 18 points, two ahead of teammate Jason Brendel and three ahead of Pocket Puppies' Derek Sheldon and Derek Garnett of 9-Spoke.

Carson cross country

starts conditioning

The Carson High cross country program, the defending 4A state champions, has started its summer conditioning program.

Coach Pete Sinnott welcomes any interested runners to come out and train with his team, regardless of age or skill level.

Tonight, the group will meet at Washoe State Park at the SE end of Washoe Lake. On Fridays the team meets at Edmunds Park and on Mondays the group meets at the Spooner Maintenance Station. The group meets at 7 p.m. on each of these days.

Boykin wins top

flight at E.V.

Kim Boykin shot an 84 to win low gross honors at Eagle Valley-East on Red White & Blue Day.

Joyce Guy was the low net winner in the first flight with a 66, while Maggie Abbett was second with a 71.

Carol Casella took the second flight low gross with a 97. Amy Phelps won low net with a 72, while Marti Veverka was second with a 73.

Schrieber wins top

flight at C. Valley

Jeff Schrieber recorded a net 67 to win low net in the A flight at the Carson Valley Men's Club Three-Club tournament at Carson Valley on July 4.

Russ Coons was second with a 70 and Roger Hala was third with a 71. Augustine Martinez won low net in Flight B with a 66, while Matthew Budjako was second with a 72. Jim Tavernier won the C flight with a net of 65, five shots better than Paul Finan.

Dan Essary and Ewald Burmeister won closest-to-the-hole honors.

Maricich wins low

net with a 63

Frank Maricich shot a net 63 with the No. 2 Flight at the Silver Oaks Sunday Men's Club Monthly Masters.

Dennis Holt was second with a 66 followed by Eric Moorman, Freeman Johnson and Kevin Silsby, all with 68s.

Larry Johnson, William Kapczynski and Tom Betterton tied for first in the No. 1 flight with 69s.

Paul Jorgenson won closest-to-the hole on No. 2.

Vannort, Scoville

win at Silver Oak

Robert Vannort and John Scoville combined for a 50 to win the Silver Oaks Men's Club Modified Stableford golf tourney on June 29.

Paul Ford and Calvin Dibble were second with a 44, while Buzz Wagner and Roland Owings were next at 42. Arlo Miller and Stuart Miller were fourth at 41.

Alex Talmant (No. 2), Jim Silsby (No. 6), Don Burge (No. 7), Bob Van Nort (No. 12) and Vern Rosse (No. 14) were closest-to-the-hole winners.

Watts, Sakas win

flight titles

Mitch Watts scored 39 points to win the Nevada Flight and Dave Sakas won the Lightning Flight with 35 points at the Thunder Canyon Men's Club Stableford tournament.

Watts finished two points ahead of Chuck Griffin, Jim Valenta and Mike Bennert. Gary Sheerin and Mike McGee finished three points behind Sakas.

Anderson, Watts

win in stroke play

Mary Anderson shot a net 67 to win the Sierra Flight and Carla Watts finished with a net 62 to take the Washoe Flight at Thunder Canyon Ladies Club stroke play event on July 1.

Lynn Ann Greer was second to Anderson with a 71, while Barbara Plymell and Shirley Westfall were next at 73.

Susie Riley was second to Watts with a 70, while Karon Sullivan was third with a 73.

McGee records ace

at Thunder Canyon

Betty McGee recorded a hole-in-one on the 17th hole at Thunder Canyon on Monday afternoon. McGee aced the 118-yard hole with a 6 hybrid.
