Thunderstorms headed our way

A series of thunderstorms is expected to roll into the region this afternoon, leading the National Weather Service to issue a fire weather watch for today.

The combination of thunderstorms and dry conditions in the region could mean wildfires this week, said Rhett Nilme, a meteorologist for the NWS in Reno.

"At this point it looks like (fuels such as grass) could be cured enough that a dry lightning strike could cause fires," Nilme said.

He said the storms are expected to last through Friday with the chance of precipitation growing each day.

Temperatures also will be above normal this week, staying in the low to mid-90s. Normal is in the upper 80s.

He said the storm system is likely to be out of the region by the weekend.
