Soroptimist International of Carson City's 9th annual Stroke to Help Golf Tournament will be Sept. 25 at Eagle Valley Golf Course.

The $85 fee includes golf, cart, continental breakfast, barbecue and much more.

Masquerade benefits Piper's Opera House

Piper's Summer Masquerade, scheduled for 7-11 p.m. Saturday, will benefit the preservation efforts of Piper's Opera House in Virginia City.

This is an adult-only costume event featuring live music by The Mount Rose Trio with Freddie Pierce, Jimmy Vermilion and Danny Steele along with Gus the Dance Master. The group performs music that includes 1800s folk songs, '20s ragtime, '40s jitterbug, '50s swing and bop as well as country classics and pop.

There will be a costume contest. Masks will be available for sale at the event.

Cost of the benefit is $18 at the door, which includes appetizers and desserts. A cash bar will be available.

Jazz Guys to perform Tuesday night

Mile High Jazz Band Association presents the Jazz Guys with Kenn Pettiford, at 8-10 p.m. Tuesday in the Comma Coffee Courtyard, 312 S. Carson St.

Admission is $5 general, and free for ages 18 and younger. Dance lessons precede the band from 6-7:15 p.m., for an additional $5.

For this performance, the Jazz Guys will be joined by world-class jazz pianist, vocalist, and entertainer, Kenn Pettiford.

NAA Gallery exhibit features landscape interpretations

The Nevada Artists Association will begin its new exhibition Sunday at Carson City's Brewery Arts Center. This show will run through Aug. 20.

This show features the NAA's "landscape" show, an annual event where member artist have been provided a landscape photo. From that photo each artist creates a painting based on their individual interpretation and creativity.

Carson gamer advances to finale

Tommy Purvis will represent Carson City this weekend at the Blockbuster summer video game tournament in Reno, facing off against gamers from Reno and Sparks.

The winner will receive a choice of an XBox 360, Wii or PS3.

The tournament starts at noon Saturday at the Blockbuster Northtowne store, 2881 Northtowne Lane, off North McCarran Boulevard. There will be free hot dogs and sodas, prizes and other entertainment from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Registration open for filmmaking workshop

The Brewery Arts Center will present a youth filmmaking workshop Aug. 16-20.

During the five, action-packed days youths ages 12 to 20, will be taught the art of filmmaking: writing and developing a script, learning basic animation instruction, acting in a dramatic short film, moderating a documentary, proper operation and care of cameras, editing, and working together as a crew.

The filmmaking workshop is 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and 9 a.m.-noon Friday. Cost is $250. (Northern Nevada Film Club Members receive a $25 discount).
