Kristen Brodie's new Carson City clothing store started as a challenge from her son.
"It was just sort of an idea I started kicking around back in December or January," Brodie, 49 said. "My son said, 'I'll give you three months to do it, Mom.' And I said, 'Give me six,' and it just dominoed from there."
Brodie opened Up Your Alley The Clothing Store two weeks ago at 1212 N. Carson St. The store offers pre-owned, brand name clothing for men and women.
"We want to have something for everybody, but the target was younger adults," Brodie said, who offers GAP, Roxy, Element and other clothing brands. The store also offers belts, shoes and other accessories.
Brodie's two children, a 25-year-old son and 18-year-old daughter, help her run the store. She also manages a Carson City dental office.
The location previously belonged to a pet store, so Brodie and her son replaced the carpet and repainted the interior to freshen up the place.
"I think it was Memorial Day weekend I had him in here until midnight when we finished up painting," she said.
Brodie said this is her first time opening a small business.
"It's just to see if we could," she said, adding, "No fear no more."
