Nobody asked us, but ... Summer is heating up with events

Mike Lloyd, formerly of Adele's, has opened his own business, the Tap Shack, on Rice Street (just off Carson Street two blocks north of E. William St./Highway 50 E). It's a quiet little lounge, with a fine outdoor patio and a no smoking policy. Mike, as you recall, is the great guy who gave one of his kidneys to a neighbor. Drop in when you need a libation and good conversation.

From "Rondo" Saunders and the Internet: "A guy was on trial for murder and if convicted, would get the electric chair. His brother looked over the jury and figured he could bribe one of them to reduce the charge to manslaughter. He offered the juror $10,000 and the juror agreed. The jury was out for a week and came back with the manslaughter verdict. As the man went to pay the bribe, the juror told him it wasn't the least bit easy to convince the rest of the jury to change the charge. 'They all wanted to let him go.'"

Corrections: Sgt. Matthew Hennigan from Las Vegas was killed in Afghanistan recently. Last week, our spelling of his last name was incorrect. Also, the BAC's "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum," will be opening at 7:30 p.m. July 23 in the outdoor theater.

Good stuff coming up ... the Mills Park Wine Train will be from 5-7:30 p.m. Saturday. You can hop on and off the train for three stops to taste wine and appetizers. No one under 21 please, and advance purchase only by calling 882-1459. Cost is $20 per person. The Senior Follies 2010 will begin July 30 at 7 p.m. at the Community Center. $10 a pop for "Seniors in Paree!" It also will run July 31 and Aug. 1 at 2 p.m., and benefits Meals on Wheels. Norma Conway directs, and Carla Wilson and Bob Reid are in charge of the music. Should be lots of fun. The Pinkerton Ballet Theatre is hosting its 2010 "Nutcracker" fundraiser Saturday at Jimmy G's Cigar Bar, 311 N. Carson St., from 6-10 p.m. Tickets are $20 and will get you good food, beer and a silent auction. Call 230-1915 for tickets and information.

We would like to commend the First United Methodist Church in Carson City for the twelfth edition of the Community Resource Guide. It provides the town (and seniors) a list of what's available to assist them with many social services. It's a true benefit to the community. Contact your doctor's office or the church for a copy.

WNC has some great people ... and they are trying to gather funds to send the creation of Kevin Burns, Don Carlson and Marilee Swirczek's "Always Lost: A Meditation on War" to other venues who've requested it. It is a compilation of pictures of all the service men and women who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan and is currently at the college. Call 445-3240 if you can help them out.
