Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels: Silver Dollar to those supporting American Cancer Society

The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.

Silver Dollar: To the Carson City Relay for Life teams who are, probably as you read this, walking at Edmonds Sports Complex to raise money for cancer research. The relay started at 5 p.m. last night and wraps up this morning; the event is held overnight, organizers say, because cancer never sleeps. Stacey Dutra, co-chairman along with Michelle Bertocchi and herself a cancer survivor, said of the special survivor's walk that starts the event: "It's a powerful couple of minutes as you walk around the track being encouraged by people who are celebrating your survivorship. I wish every survivor could experience that." So do we.

Wooden nickel: To CNBC, which named Nevada 47th among the states to do business in. That stings, especially coming less than a month after being among the best in a ranking by Chief Executive Magazine. Now, we Nevadans know these rankings come out pretty regularly, and we often end up at or near the bottom in all manner of categories. We also know that things are pretty grim around here right now. But what CNBC may not have taken into consideration is that Nevada is a yin-yang kind of place, and once you get north of Las Vegas, we have some of the world's best scenery, climate and a smart and capable workforce ready to go - just see the story on page 1 today. So, if it's all the same to you, CNBC, we'll just stick with the chief executives' list, thank you very much.

Silver Dollar: To Carson Station owner Clark Russell's announcement last week that plans are afoot to reopen the Station Grille later this year. That, and word of Gottschalk by Joe Levy's continued positive outlook for returning to the Carson Mall, on top of several new businesses opening ... those green shoots are adding up to a lawnful of good economic news.
