A Carson City woman was arrested Monday after police found a 6-year-old boy left at home alone.
Tessla Higuera, 20, was arrested on suspicion of child neglect, a gross misdemeanor, and consuming alcohol as a minor, a misdemeanor.
The Carson City Sheriff's department was contacted shortly after 10 p.m. Monday to pay a visit to 777 Silver Oak Drive.
When a police arrived, Higuera's 6-year-old nephew answered the door. The nephew allegedly told police that Higuera, who was not in the residence, had been drinking since 4 p.m.
Inside the home, police found trash on the floor, piled up in the sink area as well as kitchen knives and a pair of scissors in the open. According to the report, an open beer can also was within the child's reach.
About two hours later, a visibly intoxicated Higuera showed up to the front door with her 3-year-old niece, according to police.
When asked by police why she left her nephew home alone, Higuera allegedly responded: "They're not my kids ... why should I care about them?"
After arriving at the jail, a breath test showed Higuera had a BAC of .292.
Bail was set at $2,737.
The children were turned over to other relatives.
