CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons may have struck out with voters, but he's a hit with artists who want to paint his official portrait.
Forty-four artists from around the country have entered the competition to paint Gibbons' portrait that will hang in the state Capitol.
Gibbons in June became the first incumbent governor in Nevada history to lose a primary election.
The Department of Cultural Affairs says applicants will be screened ensure they meet criteria of having at least two previous commissioned portraits.
A panel will then narrow the field of contestants before the governor makes the final choice.
The winner will be paid $17,500 for the painting, frame and hanging materials and will receive up to $2,500 for travel.
Work must be completed by Dec. 17.
