Area trio headed to X Games in L.A.

Matt Buyten (Minden), Adam Jones (Minden) and Mike Mason (Carson City) have been invited to compete in the Moto X competitions at X Games 16 in Los Angeles starting Thursday.

ESPN X Games celebrates its 16th year by taking over downtown Los Angeles with more than 200 athletes, including the biggest names in action sports, competing for the most coveted medals in Skateboard, BMX Freestyle, Moto X and Rally Car.

Mason, a two-time X Games Moto X Freestyle bronze medalist, returns for his fifth X Games appearance, still looking for his first X Games gold medal.

While still a solid freestyle rider, Buyten is best-known for his Step-Up skills. The two-time X Games Moto X Step-Up gold medalist and Moto X World Championship gold helmet winner, Buyten has dominated the Step-Up field. Buyten has been a part of some of the most dramatic finals in the sport, including a 17-attempt battle with Jeremy McGrath in 2004.

A four-time X Games medalist, Jones is one of the most innovative riders on the X Games roster. The inventor of the Cordova flip, Stripper flip, Shaolin flip and Corpse flip, Jones prides himself on learning his tricks on dirt rather than in a foam pit.

Soccer camp set for

Indian Hills

Next week, Douglas High School junior varsity girl's soccer coach Jenny Jaggard will be running a week-long, youth soccer camp for boys and girls ages 8-13.

The camp is designed to teach kids the fundamentals of the game. Each day of camp begins with a focus upon a particular skill such as dribbling, passing and shooting and then ends with various games that allow the kids to put their newly learned skills into practice.

The camp will be August 2-6 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at James Lee Park in Indian Hills.

Aces host benefit

on Aug. 11

RENO - Manager Brett Butler and select Reno Aces players will act as celebrity servers for a special dinner at Bugsy's Sports Bar and Grill on Aug. 11, with all proceeds to benefit the Reno Aces Foundation, the organization announced today.

Following the Aces' 1:05 p.m. game on Aug. 11, the ballclub will host a private dinner in the Freight House District beginning at 5 p.m.

Admission into this special dinner will be just $65. For the price of admission, fans will receive dinner, drinks and a ticket to that day's game against the Memphis Redbirds.

Dinner will consist of one-half slab of ribs, a plate of nachos, the choice of one of four premium entrees and dessert. All beer, wine and liquor will be included in the price of admission.

Fans can RSVP beginning at 10 a.m. today by contacting Amanda at 334-7002. Space is limited, and spots are expected to fill-up very quickly.

Carson 14s upended

in state finals

GARDNERVILLE - Reno West knocked off Carson City twice at Lampe Park over the weekend to claim the state 14-year-old Babe Ruth championship.

In the first game on Saturday, Reno West scored in the last of the seventh to grab a 5-4 win. In the second game, Reno West won 6-5 in eight innings, scoring a single run in the seventh to send the game to extra innings and then scoring once in the eighth to win it.

In the opener, Carson carried a 4-1 lead in the top of the sixth behind the stellar pitching of Luke Maher. Maher had to leave because of pitching eligibility rules. He allowed a run and two hits in five innings.

Reno tied the game with three runs, as three walks, a passed ball, sacrifice fly and an error accounted for the damage.

A two-out hit in the seventh gave Reno a 5-4 lead, and Carson went out quietly to end the game.

Carson had hits by TJ Thomsen, Cody Schmidilin, Maher, Jace Zampiro, Nevin Elliot and Chase Blueberg.

In the second championship game, Reno West bolted to a 4-0 lead, but Carson fought back to tie the game at 4 thanks to twin two-run outbursts in the first and second. Blueberg and Gehrig Tucker had key hits.

In the bottom of the third, Carson scored without a hit to take a 5-4 lead.

The game remained that way until the seventh when Reno West tied the game on a two-strike single. Reno added one in the eighth to win it.

Blueberg and Maher led the hitting going 2-for-3 apiece.

Twisted Stix takes

Comstock lead

Twisted Stix With Attitudes has moved past 9-Spoke and into the lead in the Carson City chapter of the Comstock Division of the American Poolplayers Association.

Twisted Stix has 779 points, 18 better than 9-Spoke.

Daniel McRae of Cornbread & Whiskey leads the 6-9 tier with 41 points. Jerry Lehman of Tommy's leads the 4-5 tier with 31 points. Derek Sheldon of Pocket Puppies leads the 1-3 tier with 23 points.

In the Mosconi Division, Cues Yer Daddy (36 points) holds a one point lead over Big Dogs and Jerry's Kids.

James Underwood of Squeeze Play and Kenneth Gabbard of The Spoke are tied for the 6-7 tier lead with 24 points apiece. Dennis Sisson Jr. leads the 4-5 tier with 28 points. Anthony Cupp of Fun Tickets leads the 2-3 tier with 25 points.

Freeman Johnson shot a net 62 to win the 3 Clubs and a Putter tournament on July 18.

Jim Fuller was second with a 64 followed by Chang S Suh 66, Jim Silsby 67 and Kevin Silsby 70.

Shyrl Bailey knocked off Susie Riley 16-4 to highlight the Thunder Canyon Ladies Club Match Play event on July 22.

Ponte wins top flight

at Eagle Valley

Robin Ponte shot an 84 to win low gross in the first flight of the Eagle Valley Women's Golf Club tourney.

Carol McIntyre (94) and Gerri Murphy (104) were the other low gross flight winners. Georgia Silva and Beth Juri tied for low net honors in the top flight with 67s.
