Big Lots, a discount department store, will open in Carson City this fall, according to Ed Shaw, a representative for property manager Carson Southgate LLC.
The new store, at 4215 S. Carson St., will be housed in a 70,000-square- foot building that was built after Walmart left the Southgate Shopping Center in 2002.
It will be adjacent to the 50,000-square-foot Burlington Coat Factory at 4209 S. Carson St., which also is managed by Carson Southgate LLC.
Shaw said Big Lots is expected to open after Oct. 15 when improvements are done to the building.
"They are trying to get open before the holiday season," Shaw said.
The location has been empty for years and was expected to be filled by the Sportsman Warehouse, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2009.
JC Penney is located at the north end of the shopping center.
