The Obesity Prevention Foundation is on a mission to get families moving. Let's Move Nevada! - an initiative designed to increase awareness and understanding about childhood obesity - takes place throughout the month of June and provides creative opportunities for parents and children to get active.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that children engage in 60 minutes or more of daily physical activity in order to grow up to a healthy weight. Adults should engage in a moderate mix of aerobic exercise and muscle strengthening several days a week.
"Let's Move Nevada has got to be the top health priority for everybody in the state right now," said Dr. Kent Sasse, founder of the Obesity Prevention Foundation. "If you really think about the number one health problem for both children and adults, it's weight gain."
In order to help families discover fun ways to get fit, Dr. Sasse and the Obesity Prevention Foundation have created the free Let's Move Nevada! Activity Tour. Families can start the tour with free health screenings and counseling from certified counselors at the International Metabolic Institute. Screenings will be available 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today Participants can call iMetabolic at (775) 829-7999 for an appointment.
The Let's Move Nevada! Activity Tour also includes a free boxing clinic, garden workshop, kids bike race, boot camp and hula-hoop session. Families can download an Activity Tour passport at www.obesitypreventionfoundation.org and get a stamp at every weekly Let's Move Nevada! event. Participants who get active on every stop of the tour will win their share of prizes.
