Pond tour planned in Carson City, Carson Valley

Tickets go on sale Thursday for the Northern Nevada Pond Club pond tour. The tour in Carson Valley and Carson City will be July 10.

Enjoy the beauty and serenity of ponds of all types, ranging from simple to very elaborate. See various types of fish, plants, waterfalls, fountains, streams, and landscaping. Visit with pond owners. Exchange ideas about pond construction and water gardening. Discover why the term "koi" comes from a Japanese expression meaning, "living jewels."

Tickets are $10 a person or $15 a couple and will be available at Greenhouse Garden Center in Carson City (775-882-8600); Carson Valley Garden & Ranch Center in Gardnerville (752-1548) and Oasis Water Gardens in Reno (775-358-6060).

Reservations for Girls State tea are due June 9

The Capitol Unit 4 of the American Legion Auxiliary is having a Girls State Benefit Tea at the Governor's Mansion at 5-7 p.m. Friday, June 18. Light appetizers and beverages will be served.

The proceeds from the silent auction, raffle and tickets sales will benefit Girls State delegate scholarships from Carson and Douglas High schools.

Presale tickets are required and cost $5. No tickets will be sold after June 9.

GOP meeting features nuclear consultant

Douglas County Republican Central Committee's June 10 meeting will be in the Faith/Genesis Room at St. Gall Catholic Church, 1343 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville.

The guest speaker will be Gary Sozzi, a nuclear consultant and a specialist in reactor design and reactor thermal hydraulics. The topic of discussion will be Yucca Mountain.

A social with refreshments begins at 7 p.m.. The meeting convenes at 7:30 p.m. The executive board meets at 5 p.m. at headquarters. There are several articles of interest to read on website at www.douglasgop.org.

Space available for Silver Springs parking lot sale

Silver Spring Senior Center will have a parking lot sale 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Thrift Store Back parking lot.

Space is available for individuals and organizations for $10 per space. Vendors can set up at 9 a.m. the day of the sale.

The sale is a fundraiser for the center.

Railroads topic of Carson Valley museum lecture

The Carson Valley Historical Society's next lecture will be given at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Frank Ackerman will talk about railroads in Nevada.

Ackerman is knowledgeable about the history of railroads in Nevada, including the "Virginia & Truckee" Railroad. He will talk about train robberies and the moving of gold and silver from mines to shipping areas.
