Lyon County Sheriff Allen Veil and retired deputy Brett Palmer will go head-to-head in the November general election after knocking out opponent Mark Lumpkin in Tuesday's primary election.
Final votes indicated Veil, in his first term as sheriff, picked up 53.66 percent of the votes with 4,865 ballots cast for him. Palmer snagged 2,441 votes for 26.92. Challenger Mark Lumpkin picked up 1,761 for 19.42 percent.
"I am very honored to receive the number of votes that I did. I think it shows that a majority of the folks are paying attention to what's going on in Lyon county and the job that we've done and I think they appreciate what we've done and their votes show that," said Veil.
Palmer said the primary win provides momentary relief.
"Now we move on to the next step and five months of hard work," he said.
In the race for Lyon County District 5, incumbent Commissioner Virgil Arellano will face Clifford Thompson in the general election.
While Arellano had a healthy lead over his opponents with 41.58 percent, Thompson, of Yerington, narrowly beat Paul Costa, of Wellington, with 29.33 percent to Costa's 29 percent.
Thirteen votes separated the two opponents.
Both candidates for District 2 commissioner, Vida Keller and Charles Lawson, advance automatically to the general election.
