For the fourth consecutive year, local dentists Jonothan Bauter and William Holmes will be collecting school supplies and distributing them among Carson City's six elementary schools. The dentists also will match a portion of cash donations received during the drive.
Denise DiMarzo, office manager at Empire Elementary School, said the donations particularly help Empire students whose needs are significant due the high incidence of poverty at the school.
"Our children struggle with financial issues at home," she said. "We try to augment their needs as much as possible."
DiMarzo said the Bauter and Holmes supply drive has been a blessing to students.
"We have a supply closet for needy families, and when they come in without these things, we canvas their needs and fill them with what Bauter and Holmes have so graciously supplied," she said.
DiMarzo said the school often supplies personal items for the children, including shampoo, combs and brushes, toothpaste and toothbrushes. Students also need facial tissue and hand sanitizer along with more traditional school supplies such as pencils, pens, crayons, colored pencils and composition books.
The supply drive runs from June 11 through August 19. Donations can be dropped off between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday at Bauter and Holmes Advanced Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry, 525 W. Washington St., Carson City.
