At least four former International Chili Society world champions are scheduled to participate in two regional chili cookoffs on the Independence Day weekend in Carson City.

Competitors will be Ed Pierczynski, the 1992 World Champion from Carson City, as well as Jim Knudson from 2006 and Margo Knudson from 1987, the founders of Jimboy's Tacos

The High Sierra Regional Cookoff will take place July 3, while the Nevada Capital Regional is set for July 4. The winners of both cookoffs qualify for the 2010 World Championship Chili Cookoff in Manchester, New Hampshire in October.

Each day will feature salsa, chile verde, red chili and a locals cookoff as well as a craft show.

All events will take place on the lawn at Glen Eagles Restaurant on the north end of town from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Chili will be available to taste throughout both days. All proceeds will benefit the Soroptimist Charities.

"This year, we are inviting local cooks to cook in a separate competition for bragging rights to the best chili in Carson City. There will be no ICS cooks allowed. We hope that some serious rivalries will develop between service clubs, schools, local businesses and individuals," said organizer Bob Grayson.
