Help came to the Dayton Food Pantry from unexpected sources Thursday, when members of the U.S. Army, Assemblyman James Settelmeyer and Steve Yeater showed up to lend their support.

"Freida (Carbery, volunteer coordinator) put in a request for tents, so we're here to help," said Warrant Officer Tanya Leonard, stationed in Carson City.

She was assisted by Sgt. Tim Carter of the 1/168 General Support Aviation Battalion, and Staff Sgt. Eduardo Conde, Joint Forces Headquarters, Carson City.

Settelmeyer, who is running for state Senate, and Yeater, Settelmeyer's opponent in the primary election, arrived bearing a cash donation of $50, as well as 40 half-pound packages of beef provided by Settelmeyer Ranch in Minden. They also were making donations at the food banks in Silver Springs and Yerington.

"My family has always been involved in politics and do what we can to help our community," Settelmeyer said. "Both (Steve and I) are here to make this donation on behalf of ourselves and Settelmeyer Ranch."

The food pantry distributed food Thursday to 673 people.

Working from its temporary home on Enterprise Way has proven a challenge, but the help of caring individuals and volunteers makes her job easier, Carbery said.

"It's awesome and gives me hope for the future," she said. "Every bit of support makes a difference."
