Happy Father's Day to all you dads who come through for their kids. Treat Dad to a barbecue, ball game, new socks ... whatever floats his boat (gee ... a boat would probably hit the spot, too). And don't forget any good guy who's been like a father to you. You also can take him for a train ride at the Nevada State Railroad Museum.

Happy birthday's this week to Kirk Jesse, Connie Evans, Ryan Schmid, Norma Conway and Jack Wyatt. Congratulations to Luis of the Villa Basque Deli and his wife on the birth of their new son, and to Father Jesus Ballesteros on his ordination. But on the "scandalous" side, M is informing Jennie Cordisco that her husband, Ed, was seen giving C a smooch at church the other day ... oh, the inhumanity of it all ... tch, tch.

According to Mike Thomas, president of the Western Nevada Astronomical Society, there is a new comet visible to the naked eye in the northeast about two hours before sunrise. It will be there until early July, so get up early one morning this week and see the show. There will also be a partial eclipse of the moon as it sets on June 26. And, tomorrow, summer begins (we hope).

Class acts: Emily Clark, Girl Scout Troop 176. A gentleman donated to the Scouts, but didn't want the cookies...she gave him a "thank you" package anyway, along with a lovely thank you note. Then Lt. Bob White of the CC Sheriff's Office thanked his supporters in a letter to the editor, more candidates should do that.

For "constitutionalists," their "go back to the constitution" movement got a dose of realism in the cartoon "Non Sequitur" last week, when it said that when they "go back," they should only let women vote, and only black men own slaves. It's a reminder that the writers of the Constitution were not gods, but real men capable of making mistakes. Think about it.

Congratulations to Ensign Rafe Tackes, who just graduated from the Naval Academy, and to Judy Johnson (University of Washington), and sister, Linda Johnson Bartock (Johns Hopkins), for both receiving advanced degrees from those universities. Smart folks for sure. And our sympathy to the Tom Nelson family on the death of his father, Robert Nelson, who passed away recently after a long illness.

Michael Nunes had a couple of good ones off the Internet: "One year, a husband bought his mother-in-law a cemetery plot for her birthday. The next year, he didn't buy her a gift. When she asked why, he said, 'You didn't use the gift I bought you last year.'" Then there was this one: "A man and his wife were at her high school reunion watching a drunken man swilling his drinks at a nearby table. 'Do you know him?' the husband asked. 'Yes,' the wife sighed, 'he's my old boyfriend and I heard he took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago. I heard he hasn't been sober since.' 'My God,' the man said, 'who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?'" And then the fights started...

The Villa Basque Deli will be introducing a new line of international foods, Portuguese olive oils, balsamic vinegar, international teas and South Sea Islands spices. On July 10, they will have samples from 2-5 p.m. at the restaurant where you can also learn to cook with olive oils. You must pre-register by calling 884-4451. There will also be prizes. Sounds like fun. Have a good week.
