(Nevada Appeal News Service) - The two people killed in an airplane crash Thursday have been identified as the plane's owner, Raymond Rotge, 66, of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Mack Johnston, 71, of Chewelah, Wash.

The Placer County Sheriff's Office said they didn't know which one was flying at the time.

"The FAA has not determined the cause of the crash yet, the investigation is still ongoing," said Sgt. Dave Hunt.

The home-built, single-engine Vans RV8 aircraft crashed about 1 mile northeast of Truckee Tahoe Airport at about 2:10 p.m., according to the preliminary report from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Airport General Manager Kevin Smith said it was on its "base to final" approach to land, but the airport didn't hear from the plane again.

The crash is being investigated by the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board.
