City officials were testing the water in an east Carson City neighborhood today after at least two homeowners noticed green water coming out of their faucets about a week ago.

The water line affected feeds the neighborhood on Darla Way near Empire Ranch Golf Course and needs to be flushed occasionally, said Curtis Horton, Carson City's public works operations chief. Residents said the last time the city flushed the system was in mid-April.

Horton said the results from those tests should be back by Wednesday, adding the green-tinted water may be the result of high copper levels in the area water supply or surface water runoff, which he said is unlikely.

"(Public works employees) had responded to the complaint and gathered as much information they could from the neighborhood," Horton said. "They are currently sampling for water quality."

He said water samples are taken monthly around the city.

Cody Lee, 15, said his family noticed the green water last week when they tried filling their swimming pool.

"The water in the bathtub, you can't see it when it comes out, but when you fill up the tub it has a light green tint to it," Lee said, adding the water color had improved on Monday.

Starr Nixdorf, who lives in the house across the street from the Lees, said she and her husband noticed green water a week ago.

"(My husband) filled up the basin in our house ... and you could see the basin in the sink, the water is green,"

Nixdorf said. She said the green tint has subsided since last week.

"It's nothing like it was on Saturday," she said.

Five other homeowners interviewed on the block said they had not seen any green-tinted water come out of their faucets.
