RENO (AP) - An annual audit of the Washoe County Sheriff's office has identified some improper handling of the petty cash fund but no criminal wrongdoing.

The audit found that for about 18 months money from other agencies collected for attending sheriff training programs and from retiring deputies' badges was spent on unauthorized items.

In some cases the cash helped subsidize coffee and bottled water for the sheriff?s staff as well as buy flowers and greeting cards.

County Manager Katy Simon says the co-mingling of personal donations for coffee and other things was "improper and should have been recognized."

Undersheriff Todd Vinger says Sheriff Mike Haley asked for the review after he took office in 2007.
