ELKO (AP) - Elko City Council members have approved moving the kickoff party for this weekend's National Basque Festival from in front of Stockmen's Hotel & Casino to the front of the Western Folklife Center.
The Monday vote came after the festival committee sought the change of venue and the closure from 5-9 p.m. Friday of a one-block area from Fifth to Sixth streets and Railroad to Commercial streets.
Elko has a rich Basque history, and the 47th annual festival traces its origin to a city centennial event hosted by the Elko Basque Club in 1964.
Events including a parade, 5K run and picnic run through Sunday.
