Knights of Columbus St. Patrick's Dinner

The Knights of Columbus, Sierra Madre Council will hold their 13th annual St. Patrick's Day Dinner and Fundraiser. There will door prizes, and both silent and live auctions. Auction items include golf packages, dinner and show packages, fishing equipment, skiing, and much more. A cash raffle has three prizes based on a percentage of gross receipts, up to a maximum of $599. Raffle tickets are $2 each or six for $10, and you don't have to be present to win.

If you can't make this annual event, purchase raffle tickets to support this great fundraiser. Funds raised will help support the council's youth, parish and civic projects within the community, such as scholarships to St. Teresa Catholic School, building funds of St. Teresa and Corpus Christi Catholic Churches, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Eagle Valley Children's Home, Special Olympics, and many others.

WHAT: Miriam Blanchette's School of Irish Dance will feature a program of traditional and contemporary Irish dancing; catered corned beef and cabbage buffet, plus Irish stew and all the trimmings. A no-host bar will be available.

COST: This is a family event, tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children 12 and under.

GIRL SCOUT COOKIE SALES

I promised two very cute Girl Scouts that I would get the word out for the annual Girl Scouts cookie sales. I of course couldn't stop myself from purchasing four boxes of Thin Mints. I mean it does say "thin" so I am not ruining my diet, right? O.K. one box was the very decadent Carmel Delites. Girl Scout Troop #472 is up at Walmart with all your favorite cookies from Lemonades to Peanut Butter Sandwich. They will be there this weekend in the front of the Topsy Lane Walmart providing us with a tradition that I can't pass by. Also, there will be a drive-through Girl Scout cookie sale area in front of Fuji Park near Costco. Drive up order, pay and be on your way.

SEPTEMBER IS SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH

Yes, I know its March, however I don't think there should be a designated month for such a serious subject. You might not understand. I don't think most people do when the word suicide is mentioned as a cause of death. You hear them say, "He had everything going for him, he was so smart and he was so funny." These are typical comments but nothing is typical when it comes to a family losing a son, a daughter, a brother, a sister, an amazing friend. The pain of not knowing why, what could I have done differently, I wish I knew what to do, where do I go for help?

Here are the facts about Nevada's suicide rates: Nevada's rate of suicide is second highest in the country at 19.2 per 100,000. That 19.2 is almost double the national average of 10.9 per 100,000. Suicide is the sixth leading cause of death in Nevada. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in youths aged 10 to 24 years old. If you want to know more, Nevada's seniors over the age of 60 have the highest rate in the nation, double the national average for the same age group (dhhs.nv.gov/Suicide/). Check out the Web sites below if you think you need help with a mother, a friend, a co-worker. Times are hard, stress is high and you are not being rude. Saving a life is well worth saying you care.
