JOSEPH F. de ARRIETA, 91

Winnemucca and the state of Nevada lost a native son with the death of Joseph Francis Bengoa de Arrieta on Thursday, March 2, 2010.

Joe was born May 26, 1918 in Winnemucca to Spanish/Basque immigrants, Domingo Bengoa and Francisca Cobeaga. He lived his entire life in Winnemucca, attending the local grammar and high schools.

Joe was an exceptional athlete in high school; excelling in football, basketball and track. He was awarded numerous letters and awards throughout his athletic career.

After graduation in 1937, Joe attended Fresno State University to play football.

Due to an unfortunate situation within the family, he returned home to care for his ailing mother. As a way to support his family, Joe began his career at Dyer Lumber Co. He ultimately purchased the business in 1956 and operated it until his retirement in 1975.

In 1939, Joe married Gertrude McEnerney. They raised three children, Joe, Jessell and Jim. Joe and Gert were married 65 years, ending with the passing of Gert in 2005.

Joe was a World War II veteran, serving in the Navy from 1944-1946. Along with serving his country, Joe was very active in his community, belonging to several civic and religious organizations.

Throughout his business career, Joe supported numerous causes, charities and schools in his community.

Joe enjoyed life, his family and the outdoors. Family was of the utmost importance to him.

Joe is survived by his sister Mimi Drake, of Winnemucca; sons Joe (Barbara), Jim (Peggy) and daughter Jessell (Don); six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Joe's favorite saying was "Thanks for the memories."

We thank you Dad, Grandpa Joe and friend, for a lifetime of wonderful memories.

Per Joe's request, there will be a private family grave site service at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Paul's Catholic Church Building Fund, Veteran's of Foreign Wars, or Humboldt Hospice, P.O. Box 843, Winnemucca, NV 89446.
