After putting together the hottest start in Western Nevada College baseball history, the 12-3 Wildcats are set to open their conference schedule at John L. Harvey Field on Friday. But first, the No. 5-ranked Wildcats may have to contend with the weather that have plagued baseball season in this region for years.

The Wildcats are scheduled to host Eastern Utah in a Scenic West Athletic Conference matchup Friday and Saturday beginning at noon for a pair of doubleheaders. But the forecast calls for snow Friday and rain Saturday. If weather threatens the games, the schedule would be adjusted to have a tripleheader of seven-inning games Friday beginning at 11 a.m. They would then host a nine-inning game at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The Wildcats are off to a much improved start compared to last season in which they began 2-6 before making a run for the SWAC and Region XVIII titles along with a JUCO World Series appearance.

"Winning 12 of 15 games on the road to start the season is a great testament to the strong will of the players and their dedication to preparation," WNC D.J. Whittemore said in a statement. "The conference season starts a new season and is obviously much more important than anything we have done to this point."

The Wildcats return just 10 members of the 2009 squad, which won three of four games in the World Series before falling to eventual national champion Howard College.
