'Oysters' cook-off and parade in Virginia City

Virginia City hosts The 19th annual (Rocky) Mountain Oyster Fry and St. Patrick's Day Parade, on Saturday

The festivities begin at 10 a.m., when both amateur and professional cooks begin creating their special recipes. Fry contestants will be set up in The Bucket of Blood's festival grounds, on the corner of C and Union streets.

"We're expecting 12 competitors who will be judged in four categories: best overall taste, best presentation, most creative dish and best booth," said Rich Crombie, event coordinator and owner of Plan It Big Events of Reno. "We figured even if someone couldn't cook well, they could decorate the booth."

People's choice awards will also be given for best cooking station and booth. Tastes can be bought for $1 each and the overall winner will take home $500.

The family-friendly, day-long event includes face painting, street magicians, balloon animals, live music and radio broadcasts and Living Legends reenactors. The Comstock Cowboys will play at The Bucket of Blood.

"I wanted to create an atmosphere that also celebrated and brings to life the history of Virginia City," Crombie said. "By bringing all the elements together, I think everyone will have a great time."

In keeping with the Irish celebration and as an alternative to traditional green beer, Crombie created a special recipe Green Lime Elixer to be served at local saloons.

Participants can purchase a glass and then visit each participating thirst parlor.

Outback and Back Again, a store featuring unique items from Australia will also celebrate its grand opening, with a parade entry and a drawing for a Katana sword.

"This is definitely a family event and I want to encourage everyone to come out and enjoy it," Crombie said. "I am looking forward to the whole thing; I have embraced Virginia City, its history and people and feel good events can continue to support this gem that sits in our backyard.

"Even in tough economic times, people want to be entertained and there's so much that this event offers."
