LAS VEGAS (AP) - The primary contractor for the newly completed $8.5 billion CityCenter complex told the joint venture's owners that it intends to file mechanic's liens to collect on $492 million in construction bills, casino operator MGM Mirage said Friday.

MGM Mirage told federal regulators that it believes it and co-owner Dubai World owe contractor Perini Building Co., which was not directly named in the filing, far less.

MGM Mirage plans to argue the amount should be reduced because of problems with the Harmon Hotel, a tower that was to open with the rest of the 67-acre project in December but remains unfinished.

The tower was delayed and shortened because county officials said reinforcing steel wasn't spaced at intervals to support it as designed on 15 of 22 existing floors, and the companies decided not to build all the floors that were planned. The problem was fixed.

MGM Mirage said in its filing that Perini's lien could be filed within 15 days after it gave notice on Thursday.

MGM Mirage and Dubai World were still investigating how much they believed Perini should be liable for the construction problems.
