130 YEARS AGO

A complicated case: Sheriff Fitch brought in a prisoner from Elko who has two sentences hanging over him ... sentenced to two years for horse stealing and also to be hung for murder. The Appeal has always been disposed to assist people in a quandary and would suggest that the man be hung next month to carry out one sentence and then buried for two years in the state prison yard.

120 YEARS AGO

Burning of the Cascade House: "Yank" (Ephraim "Yank" Clement, Tallac Point House), states that when the Cascade House burned, the snow was 10 feet on the level and they saved nothing. Mrs. Clement lost all her clothes ... there was no insurance. This is the third time he has lost a hotel by fire. The "ancient mariner" says, "Come over and you shall be welcome, I'm not broke yet."

70 YEARS AGO

More than 250 movie stars and newspaper men left for Reno and Virginia City to attend the world premier of Warner Brothers' "Virginia City." Errol Flynn, Miriam Hopkins, Randolf Scott and Humphrey Bogart, stars of the firm, were among the actors who went to see the first public showing.

20 YEARS AGO

Voters were polled and want to save the V&T Railroad shops but 57 percent don't want to pay for a 20-year tax override used for rehabilitation of the 117-year old structure.

Gas prices are up 40 cents a gallon to $1.82 - fueled by a world-wide shortage of crude oil.
