Smoke from controlled burns fill south valley

A series of controlled burns between Sunridge and Johnson Lane in Minden are sending up a plume of smoke visible from Carson City.

According to East Fork Fire Capt. Terry Taylor, the burns are happening on 200-plus agriculture and marsh acreage belonging to the Incline Village General Improvement District's

'Its a series of controlled burns to reduce noxious weeds and cattails. About every five to six years they go through with pattern burning to remove vegetation and create fuel breaks," said Taylor.

He said more burns are expected on that land in the next couple of weeks.
