REAL HERO: Wayne Nash, Good Samaritan

Carson High basketball coach and engineer Wayne Nash was nominated by co-worker Erin Been for trying to help a mortally wounded teen on Mother's Day in Washoe Valley.

Nash and his family were driving through Washoe Valley on May 10 when the car in front of them swerved. Fearing there had been an accident, Nash stopped to help and was shot as the other vehicle drove away. The horrific event claimed the life of Carson City teen Rene Angulo, 17. Nash spent months recovering and still does not have full feeling in his leg.

"Random acts of kindness need to be recognized in today's volatile society. Good Samaritan acts need attention because if it wasn't for kindness and helping others out, this world would be dismal," said Been. "I find Wayne - and I am positive the whole community can attest to this - to be the most kind-hearted, gentle, loving soul imaginable."

Nash has been recognized and awarded proclamations from both the mayor and governor. He was recognized with the Civil Medal of Valor by the Department of Public Safety. He was also recognized by the Nevada Highway Patrol.
