Two birds short: Hub Parker of this city recently won an elegant double-barreled breech-loading fowling piece in San Francisco and his friends saw him walking along the street with an agile step. They naturally concluded that he had once again taken in the laurels of victory. As he came out of the post office they rushed up and shouted: "How'd she come out?" "Killed thirteen out of fifteen," "Good enough," said everybody. "But that wasn't enough. You see, the first bird ducked down behind the trip and skulked off close to the ground. I just skinned the feathers off the rest of 'em until my ninth bird flipped and zigzagged around like the letters on a Chinese tea box.

The count: The daughter of Gen. McHenry became engaged to what she supposed was a German Count, but discovered instead that he was a cook. She is to be congratulated as she is the first American girl who has had the good fortune to pick up a Count who could do anything for himself.
