Fifteen of the 20 Carson City groups requesting Community Support Service grants will share the $256,200 set aside in Carson City's general fund for 2010-11.
The board of supervisors, who heard presentations from each group, will formally make the final allocations in the form of a resolution next month, said Janet Busse, the city's office manager.
Finance Director Nick Providenti said the philosophy for the grants is that investing in support services saves the city money in the long run by offering preventative services and quality of life programs.
"We're leveraging our money to get more bang for our buck," Providenti said. "The thinking is that if they're helping people in something like detox, it can keep them out of our jails."
The biggest piece of the pie recommended by city staff would be $71,900 for the Partnership Carson City coalition. The coalition works to prevent the effects of gangs, methamphetamine and other illegal drug and alcohol use, and in initiating and supporting grass-roots, community-wide programs and strategies. The group projects it will serve 1,450 youth and 1,288 adults in the coming year.
Recommended for the Carson City Community Counseling Center is $38,300. The purpose of the center is to provide primarily the citizens of Carson City with affordable alcohol and drug assessments and treatment, and other services. The center expects to treat 1,513 youth, 31,159 adults and 311 seniors.
Funding in the amount of $26,600 is recommended for Partnership Carson City United Latino Services, which plans to serve 45 youth, 750 adults and 500 seniors.
Other funding amounts recommended for community support groups are:

• Nevada Day Inc., $21,500
• Home Health Services, $5,000
• Chorus of the Comstock, $1,400
• CASA of Carson City, $18,000
• Carson City Symphony, $2,900
• Capital Cities Circles Initiative, $4,400
• Advocates to End Domestic Violence, $8,500
• Mile High Jazz Band Association, $1,000
Additionally, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada is set to receive $100,000 from the Q-18 Quality of Life fund.
