RENO (AP) - Nevada wildlife officials say a resident in west Reno shot and killed a black bear that was raiding garbage cans in the neighborhood.
The resident called the Nevada Department of Wildlife asking for help but was told wardens couldn't respond unless the bear posed an immediate threat.
Warden Mike McCusker says the man then shot the 500-pound bear Tuesday night from a balcony using a rifle as the animal walked down his driveway.
McCusker says the bear, a 10-year-old male, was described by neighbors as being bold and unafraid of humans.
McCusker says the man who shot it isn't expected to be cited.
A wildlife department biologist says the bear was captured in the Caughlin Ranch area two years ago after causing problems and was later released.
