Pike devour bass, trout at Ely-area lake

ELY, Nev. (AP) - Pike have devoured virtually all trout and bass in an Ely-area lake once known for its blue-ribbon fishery.

Nevada Department of Wildlife officials say they now hope to eliminate Comins Lake's pike within a few years and restock it with trout and bass.

Agency fisheries biologist Chris Crookshanks says someone deliberately introduced northern pike into the lake in 1999, a decade after the fish was eliminated from it.

In its heyday, Comins Lake ranked fourth in the state for fishing, trailing only Mead and Mojave lakes and the Truckee River.

Crookshanks says it was not uncommon for him to count up to 300 anglers at the lake five to 10 years ago, but now he only sees several anglers.
