Winter roars back

Power outages and 15 car accidents were left in the wake of the powerful storm that blew through the region Monday and Tuesday.

A 36-unit apartment complex in Carson City went without power from late Monday until mid-afternoon on Tuesday after a power pole on Telegraph Street was blown over, damaging its transformer Monday evening, said Karl Walquist, a spokesman with NV Energy.

The power line was repaired Tuesday and electricity was restored to the apartments on Telegraph and Elizabeth streets. The power outage, which started at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, also affected some homes.

A power line in Dayton also was knocked over by strong winds, shutting off power for 1,950 customers Monday night, Walquist said. The outage lasted about an hour.

Meanwhile, the Nevada Highway Patrol also reported 15 accidents in the area Tuesday morning, three resulting in injuries.

Most of the accidents happened on roads leading into the Sierra, including a four-car accident on Kingsbury Grade that resulted in one person being transported to an area hospital.

Four accidents were reported on U.S. 50 west of U.S. 395, all four between 10:10 and 11 a.m. Three accidents were reported on Mt. Rose Highway.

Jim Wallmann, meteorologist, said the wet weather will likely continue today.

"It will remain quite cool through Thursday, with some occasional snow showers," Wallmann said.

The high today will be in the low 40s with wind gusts reaching 10 mph. By tonight, a low of 22 is expected with a half-inch of snowfall possible.

As for the weekend, "it will warm up a bit ... we're still going to be below normal," he said.

Another storm is expected late Sunday into Monday.
