Galena's Pointer drives in 10 in sweep of Douglas

If the Douglas baseball team doesn't have to see Brian Pointer again any time soon, that'll be just fine.

The Galena senior, who has signed to play for Oregon State next season, collected five hits, including two doubles and two home runs, while driving in 10 runs to lead the Sierra League-leading Grizzlies to a doubleheader sweep of Douglas in Minden Saturday morning.

In Game 1, Pointer belted two doubles and a home run with six RBIs while teammate Garrett Shutt had a double and home run with four RBIs. Both players went 3-for-3 in leading the Grizzlies to a 16-1 win over the Tigers in five innings.

Galena then closed out a three-game season sweep of the Tigers with an 11-5 win in Game 2. It marks the first time since 2006 that Douglas has been swept in a three-game league series.

Galena lefty Jace Puckett kept Douglas off balance in the opener, striking out five, walking one and giving up just two hits.

Douglas' Brett Anderson led off with a single in the first, Matt Thomas walked in the second and Ryan Moglich had a pinch-hit home run in the third, but that was it offensively for the Tigers. Puckett faced only 18 batters in the game.

Galena took a 7-0 lead early in the nightcap before Douglas was able to cut the lead to 7-5 with a two-run single from Shane Fencl in the second and a three-run home run from Cody Begovich in the fifth.

The Grizzlies came right back with a three-run sixth, however, to essentially put the game away.

Douglas got hits from Fencl, Thomas, Scott Rudnick, Danny King and Begovich in the game. Thomas struck out seven and walked two on the mound, but was hurt by four errors from the defense.

Douglas travels to Fallon Tuesday for the start of a three-game series that will essentially decide the playoff fate for both teams.

SOFTBALL

TIGERS SWEEP GALENA

Douglas maintained its lead in the Sierra League with a doubleheader sweep of Galena, 2-1 and 11-1.

In the opener, Galena led 1-0 in the third, but Naomi Roberts' sacrifice fly tied the game at 1. Katrina Morgan won the game with a homer in the fifth inning.

Chelsea Fent picked up the win, allowing four hits and strking out eight. Emily Weaver led Douglas with two hits.

In the second game, Douglas scored four runs in each of the first two innings and coasted to the five-inning win. Fent threw a six-hitter to pick up the win.

Morgan Blomstrom delivered a three-run homer to key the first-inning uprising. A solo homer by Weaver and a two-run single by Nikki Chavez were the key hits in the second inning.

Maddy Gilbert went 4-for-4, while Morgan and Blomstrom added two hits and two RBIs apiece.

VIRGINIA CITY SWEEPS

Tori Hynick allkowed just seven hits and two runs in 14 innings of work as Virginia City swept Eureka in a Northern 1A doublehader Saturday afternoon.

The sweep gives Virginia City a 4-6 record in league play.

Hynick allowed four hits and fanned three in the opener to lead the Lady Muckers to a 4-2 win. Sierra Esau went 2-for-4 and drove in a run, while Taylor Parsons and Katie Defebaugh also had run-scoring hits.

Hynick allowed just three hits in the second game, an 8-0 VC win. It was her first career shutout. She fanned three and walked four.

Esau went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Denali Fickus went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs. Daisy Jones and Alex Ballinger each drove in a run.

SWIMMING

CARSON SWEEPS RENO

Carson High's boys and girls topped Reno in a High desert League swim meet at the Carson Aquatic Center Saturday morning.

Carson won the boys meet 163-126 and the girls meet 154-107.

Luke Gentner was second in the 100 free (52.92) and second in the 50 free (23.87). H ealso swam a leg on the 300 free relay team (1:36.32) and the 400 free relay squad (3:36.19).

Tim Grunert won the 100 breastroke (1:06.08) and was second in the 200-yard IM (2:11.68). He also swam a leg on the winning 200 free relay team. Jose Reed finished fourth in the 200 free (1:59.08), fourth in the 500 free (5:24.56) and swama leg on the 400 free relay team. Gary Showalter took second in the 100 breastroke (1:10.39) and Ashton McIntosh took fourth in teh 50 free (24.35), fifth in the 100 breast (1:12.35) and swam a leg on the winning 200 free relay squad.

Jamie Showalter won the 500 free (5:34.40), took fourth in the 200 free (2:05.64), took second oin the 200 free relay and swam on the second-place 400 free relay team.

Alexandra Schlager was fourth in the 100 free (1:06.37) and fourth in the 50 free (29.76). Sophie Holmes swam on the second-place 400 free relay squad and took second in the 100 breast (1:19.16). Erin Chang was second in the 50 free (27.66) and was on the second place 200 and 400-free relay squads.

In diving, Brian Lester was second with 141.05 points.

TRACK

FALLON, FERNLEY WIN TITLES

The Fallon boys and Fernley gils won team titles at Saturday's Yerington Relays at Yerington High School.

Makenna Lommori of YTerington won the shot put (38-1) and took third in the discus (121-10). She edged out Dayton's Kathie Arias, who was third in the shot at 36-10 and fourth in the discus at 120-11.

Tori Cooper of Yerington was fourth in the 100 (13.35), sixth in the 100 hurdles (17.72) and fifth in the 300 hurdles (50.78). Alex Roberts of Yerington vaulted 11 feet to finish third.

On the boys side, Kevin Foster won the 200 meters in 23.08. Sierra Lutheran's Nick DePaoli won the 400 (51.93) and was third in the 200 (23.35). Yerington's James Cuthbert was second in the 110 high hurdles (16.49) and the 300 hurdles (42.00). Dayton's Cameron McGilford was fourth in the 300 hurdles (42.79) and fifth in the 110 highs (17.19). Dayton's Ray King cleared 11 feet in the pole vault to finish third, while teammate Manuel Castaneda was fifth in the shot (44-7) and Kage Walker placed sixth in the high jump (5-10).

JV BASEBALL

MINERS SWEEP CARSON

Bishop Manogue driled Carson 16-4 and 15-4 in a Sierra League doubleheader Saturday at Carson High.

Carter Nuckolls went 2-for-3 with a double in the opener, while Zach Hudson went 2-for-2 and drove in two runs. In the second game, Nuckolls went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs.

Carson dropped to 11-7 in league and 16-10 overall. The teams plays at South Tahoe Wednesday at 3:45 p.m.
