State studies taxing vehicles by the mile

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Nevada transportation officials are floating a proposal to charge motorists by the mile for vehicle travel.

The state Department of Transportation had begun a $100,000 study of what it's calling a Vehicle Miles Traveled fee, or VMT.

But the reaction among the few people to get a look at it Thursday in Las Vegas was overwhelming.

They don't want it.

Some called it an intrusion of privacy.

Others say they don't want the state installing devices in their vehicle to track their mileage and whereabouts.

NDOT says it's looking to supplement gas tax revenues for road building and maintenance because more people are using fuel-efficient cars and paying less at the pump.
