WNC baseball splits with Salt Lake

SALT LAKE CITY - Western Nevada College's baseball squad split its Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader with Salt Lake City Saturday afternoon.

Western won the first game 6-0 and dropped the second game 8-5.

Western is 24-10 entering today's doubleheader which starts at 11 a.m.

"We're not dead yet," said WNC coach D.J. Whittemore, whose team still holds the No. 2 spot in the league behind Southern Nevada.

In the opener, Kramer Champlin threw a complete game six-hitter. He fanned four and walked just one.

The Wildcats put the game away in the second when they scored five times, two coming on a single by Brooks Klein. Andrew Garcia also had a run-scoring single.

Klein led the offense with three hits, while Garcia added two. Eric Maupin, Kevin Taylor and Chris Sinclair added a hit each.

In the second game, WNC led 4-3 entering the bottom of the fifth in the nine-inning game.

Two errors and the failure to convert a comebacker into a double play led to three SLCC runs and WNC staring at a 6-4 deficit. WNC closed to 6-5 in the sixth, but SLCC scored once in the seventh and again in the eighth to secure the win.

Maupin, Taylor , Trevor Goff and Jay Skilton all had two hits for WNC.

Jordan Lewis took the loss for WNC. He worked four innings and yielded five runs, four earned. He struck out two and walked one.

SOFTBALL

WILDCATS LOSE TWICE

TWIN FALLS, ID. - The Western Nevada softball continued its solid play but came up short against No. 13 Southern Idaho on Saturday.

WNC lost 6-3 and 14-7, and were in both games in the early innings.

"We played really well," WNC coach Leah Wentworth said. "We really are peaking at the right time. We are executing the fundamentals and it's starting to payoff. The entire lineup is getting hits and we are playing solid defensively."

WNC finished 6-38 in SWAC play and is currently in position to make the SWAC tournament which begins on May 13. Ashley Hall, Elisa Dawson, Ashley Williams and Kelsie Fahr all went 1-for-3 in the opener. Fahr added an RBI. Alex Arciniega and a Paige Savage were both 1-for-4. Savage added an RBI.

In the second game, Dawson was 2-for-3 with a triple and four RBIs. Fahr went 2-for-4. Arciniega, Hall, Alissa Rampa and Lisa Senko all added hits. Hall had an RBI.
