CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles had to temporarily suspend issuing driver's licenses to out-of-state and first-time drivers when its authority to issue "Real ID" secure licenses expired Friday.
Gov. Jim Gibbons in January imposed Real ID requirements for 120 days by executive order. But that expired 5 p.m. April 30, and DMV spokesman Tom Jacobs says agency computers had to be updated to allow the issuance of standard licenses to first-time Nevada applicants.
Jacobs late Monday said that work has been completed, and standard licenses for new residents and new drivers can be processed beginning Tuesday.
A legislative panel is expected to take final action this week on a proposal to make the Advanced Secure Issuance licenses, identified with a gold star, optional rather than mandatory.
