RTO looking for a few good men, women

The Reno-Tahoe Open is looking for volunteers for this year's tournament which is scheduled for July 12-18 at Montreux Golf & Country Club.

Hundreds of positions are now available including transportation coordinators, Shotlink laser operators and score keepers. Interested parties are encouraged to register now by visiting www.RenoTahoeOpen.com.

Round up a group of friends or co-workers or sign the kids up for a day on the course this summer and in return gain full access to the seven-day tournament, an invitation to the annual volunteer party, a logo tournament polo shirt, complimentary food and beverage options during each shift and benefits around town including discounts and specials through local merchants and organizations.

"Volunteers, many of whom return year after year, are key to our ability to produce a successful PGA Tour event each summer," said Jana Smoley, Reno-Tahoe Open executive director. "Volunteering at the Reno-Tahoe Open is a great way to get involved in helping the non-profits in our community, and serves as a great opportunity to get up close and personal with the world of professional golf."

Volunteer applications are now available at www.RenoTahoeOpen.com. The cost is $50, which includes the required uniform. As part of the package, participants also receive an exclusive invitation to the annual volunteer party at Montreux Golf & Country Club as a thank you for the donated time and effort.

Golf fundraiser for

CHS summer baseball

The Carson Blue Jays, the Carson High summer baseball team, is hosting a 4-person scramble on May 16 at 1:30 p.m. at Silver Oak Golf Course .

The cost is $85 per player which includes golf and cart, range balls and a tri-tip dinner following the round.

Hole sponsorships are available for $125 for regular holes and $175 for longest drive and closest-to-the-pin holes. Prizes will be given to the top three teams, closest-to-the-pin for men and women and longest drive for men and women.

Role Models hold

narrow lead

The Role Models hold a 67-66 lead over Jerry's Kids in the Mosconi Division of the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association.

Twisted Stix With Attitudes is third with 64 points, one better than the Big Dogs.

Casey Richards leads the 4-5 tier with 45 points, while Daniel McRae of Rack Fink is next at 37 and Austin Matthews of Jerry's Kids is third at 36. Juan Pina of Twisted Stix leads the 6-7 tier with 58 points, four better than Alex Gutierrez of Role Models. Don Allred of Scratch Masters is third with 50. Jason Brendel, also of Twisted Stix, leads the 2-3 tier with 34 points. Seth Kemper of Rack Fink is second with 29 and Brandy Delaney of Cues Yer Daddy is third with 28 points.

Bennert wins Thunder Canyon event

Mike Bennert shot a net 69 to win the Beat the Pro game at Thunder Canyon back on April 30.

Fran Menante was next with a 70, while Mike Schellin and Jim Muth tied for third at 71. Al Fredrick was fourth at even-par 72.

Carl and Kelli Baker teamed with Ray and Sharon Badger to win the Sunday Mixer 4-person scramble held at Thunder Canyon on May 2. The foursome had a score of 27.1.

Ron Baby and Sharon Bratzler, and Mike and Nancy Maloy finished at 28.8. Larry Goodnight, Caludia Goodnight, Lindsay Goodnight and Jim Hunt combined for a 29.4 which put themn in a third-place tie with Jim and Carol Grimpe, and Norm and Barbee Jacobsen.

Excel fundraiser set

Excel Athletics Taco Feed Fundraiser is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Fuji Park indoor Exhibit Hall.

Cost is $10, and the money goes to support Carson, Douglas, and Tahoe youth football. There will be raffle and door prizes, a silent auction, a live DJ and more fun activities.

Martin records ace

Gardnerville's Sandy Martin aced the par-3 144-yard 7th hole at the resort course at Genoa Lakes.

Martin used a 9-iron for his shot, and the feat was witnessed by Roger Haupt and Michael Costello.

Special Olympics meeting

Special Olympics has scheduled an informational meeting on May 11 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Pinion Room at the Gold Dust West Hotel & CasinoCome.

The new local program coordinator will outlinewhere the group is headed. Food and beverage will be available on a first come, first served basis.

Batis wins race

Jason Batis, a local dirt-stock racer finished first in the heat race, trophy dash and the main event, last weekend at Diamond Mountain Speedway.

Batis is now the current point leader in his class, at the 1/4 mile dirt race track. Batis has raced for five years, at various race tracks, including Fallon, Fernley, Placerville, Marysville, and Susanville. He races a "77" Chevy Nova, and has numerous wins at each race track.
