The Mint Reopened: It was a pleasant sight to see the institution in full blast with a hustling, cheery appearance. The place resounded with the whirl and whirring of machinery with about 50 men at work. Superintendent Crawford received a dispatch from Washington ordering him to lay in supplies for one year, seeming to settle the question of permanency.

120 YEARS AGO

The Divining Ball: A.W. Chellis has invented an electrical mineral ball which indicates location of gold and silver coin when buried. Over 100 citizens witnessed two trials under test conditions. The inventor was blindfolded, and a large sum of money was concealed. By means of his ingenious apparatus, the hidden treasurer was found in 10 minutes.

70 YEARS AGO

Cal.-Tech Professor Interviews Carson Boy: Frederick Charles Lindvill, associate professor of electrical engineering for the California Institute of Technology at Pasadena, visited Carson City High School and spent time in personally interviewing Morris Richard Jeppson, senior, who has applied for admission to Cal.-Tech.

50 YEARS AGO

Governor Bob Miller proclaims "Teacher Day." Chris Giunchigliani, president of the 11,000 member NSEA, said Teacher Day is being recognized nationally as well as in Nevada.

Douglas High School prom goers have controversy over candy-filled wine glasses and brandy snifter that serve as mementos of the prom.
