PREP ROUNDUP: Carson sending 3 golfers to regionals

The Carson High golf team will be sending three players to regional play next week after completion of the league season on Wednesday.

The Senators, as a team, finished fifth.

The top four teams and the next five individuals not from those teams advance to regionals, which will take place Monday and Tuesday at Empire Ranch.

Representing Carson will be Garrett Gingell, Niko Brewer and Colin McCulloch.

The Bishop Manogue, Fallon, Douglas and Galena teams all advanced, along with two players from Damonte Ranch.

Carson's Mitch Parra, missed out on regionals by one point. The golfers receive points for where they finish individually in each league tournament, at the end of the year the top five continue play.

"I feel badly for Mitch," Carson coach Terry Gingell said. "I am happy for Niko, - he is a senior - he played well the last two tournaments."

The younger Gingell lead Carson during Wednesday's tournament at Arrowcreek, he shot an 82. Brewer carded an 83, tied for his best score of the year. Parra and McCulloch both scored an 88. Nathaniel Brown shot a 92, his best score of the year. Roman Smokey shot a non-scoring 94 for Carson.

"We played pretty well," Gingell said. "They played pretty steady. It was tough conditions, with the strong wind."

Gingell said Carson should play well next week, having a home-course advantage.

"They know the course very, very well," he said. "They have played it hundreds of times, so obviously that will help. All three are capable of scoring well and qualifying for state."

VARSITY BASEBALL

SENIORS LEAD DOUGLAS

MINDEN - With a playoff spot already in hand, thanks to a 5-1 win at Fallon on Tuesday, the Douglas baseball team was able to have a little fun with senior day at home Wednesday afternoon.

The Tiger seniors accounted for all but one of the team's RBIs and all but two of the team's runs in an 8-0 win over Fallon in their final regular season home game.

"It was fun to watch," Douglas head coach John Glover said. "I'm excited for them. That was awesome.

"They were having fun and it's always nice to send a group out with a win in their last home game. That's important and they did a good job today."

Aside from the proper sendoff, the win also gives the Tigers an important momentum boost after being swept by Galena last weekend.

"Last weekend was a little bit demoralizing, but the kids are showing that they are pretty resilient," Glover said. "That's a good thing to see. I'm proud of the way they responded and bounced back.

"The easier way is probably just to shut it down, but they've done a good job of persevering these past two games and hopefully we can keep it up tomorrow."

Seniors Brett Anderson and Ryan Moglich and junior Kameron Van Winkle each went 2-for-3 while Anderson drove in three runs and senior Ryan Moglich drove in two. Junior Conner Dillon had an RBI and Van Winkle hit a solo home run.

Senior Kyle Ford and sophomore Ryan Ford each doubled.

Senior Beau Battista pitched a complete game in his final regular season home appearance. He scattered four hits, struck out nine and walked two.

On Tuesday, the Tigers clinched a berth in the playoffs for the 15th consecutive year as Van Winkle tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Kyle Ford doubled and drove in a pair of runs, while Tanner Eagan, Anderson and Van Winkle each had an RBI. Van Winkle also had a double in the game.

JV BASEBALL

SENATORS WIN IN EXTRAS

Casey Wolfe's three-run home run in the top of the ninth propelled the Carson JV team to a 12-7 win at South Tahoe on Wednesday.

Wolfe, who came in to relieve starting pitcher Zak Harjes, picked up the win for the Senators.

He allowed three runs, on six hits with 11 strikeouts in six innings.

Other offensive stars for Carson were, Luke Maher who hit a two-run homer, Thomas Champion went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Dion Copoulos was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Carter Nuckolls added two hits and Logan Krupp had an RBI.

Carson improves to 12-7 in league and 17-10 overall. Carson hosts South Tahoe today and Friday for single games beginning at 3:45 p.m.
