About 75 people turned out at the Capitol Thursday for the annual National Day of Prayer celebration.
Ken Haskins, pastor of First Christian Church in Carson City, organized the event, which has been held nationally since 1952.
President Obama proclaimed May 6 the National Day of Prayer despite the ruling last month by a Wisconsin federal judge that the law directing the President to proclaim such a day violates the First Amendment prohibition against government establishing a religion. While the administration is appealing that ruling, the judge who issued it said the celebration could be held pending the result of the appeal.
In addition to several prayers offered including to protect American servicemen abroad, there were proclamations from Gov. Jim Gibbons, presented by Adjutant General Bill Burk, and by Carson Mayor Bob Crowell.
The celebration is intended to acknowledge the religious diversity of the United States.
